Physicians who can be appointed a QME in California include Medical Doctors (MD), Doctors of Osteopathy (DO), Doctors of Chiropractic (DC), Dentists (DDS), Optometrists (OD), Podiatrists (DPM), Psychologists (PsyD) and Acupuncturists (DAc). Their requirements vary slightly:
Per CA Labor Code, Doctors of Chiropractic are required to complete a 25-hour Industrial Disability Evaluator (IDE) training course, also referred to as Report Writing for Chiropractors, before being appointed as a QME.
All other allowed physicians are required to complete a 16-hour course on Disability Evaluation Report Writing before being appointed as a QME. See California Labor Code for QME for the full set of QME requirements.
Neither of the above are required to be completed before sitting for the exam, however a Test Prep course is highly recommended considering the QME Exam pass rate is only about 50%.
However, QME Resource Center students' pass rate historically averages 80%.
Our most thorough course, IDE, sometimes called Report Writing for Chiropractors, dives deeply into the toughest material to best prepare any physician for the QME Exam.
